The Itata Valley in the Bio Bio area is one of the cradles of Chilean viticulture, with a history going back nearly 500 years. The climate is near-Mediterranean, though somewhat cooler and wetter on average. Its clayey, granitic soils and balanced conditions make for wines with a lot of backbone and freshness. There is currently a clear trend toward natural wine production in the valley. The mainstream, thankfully, has shown little interest in gaining a foothold here.
